Cost for the Symposium is:
  • $95 for non-IANDS members
  • $60 for IANDS members
  • $30 for students with proof of student ID. 

Thanks to IANDS’s partnership with the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling, a division of the American Counseling Association, Licensed Counselors can receive 5.5 CEs from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Social workers also may earn 5.5 CE contact hours from the National Association of Social Workers, and the Symposium Planning Committee has applied for 5.5 CNE for nurses.

DEFINITION OF AN NDE  near-death experience. An (NDE) is a profound psychological event  that may occur to a person close to death or, if not near death, in a situation of physical or emotional crisis. Because it includes transcendental and mystical elements, an NDE is a powerful event of consciousness; it is not mental illness. 1 

Whether happening “truly near death” or under benign circumstances, the near-death experience contains powerful images and emotions, usually of peace and love though sometimes terror, despair, guilt. An NDE may include an out-of-body experience and vivid perceptions of movement, light, darkness; encounters with deceased loved ones, unfamiliar entities and/or spiritual presences; sometimes a life review, a landscape, a sense of overpowering knowledge and purpose. The aftereffects of an NDE or related experience are enduring, often powerful, and may be life-altering.

The NDE belongs to a larger family of experiences that go beyond the usual limits of space and time and can transform a person's life and beliefs. They may be called spiritually transformative, conversion, mystical, religious, or transpersonal experiences.

One-fourth of the 800 people who have submitted an account of their experience to the IANDS online NDE archives reported they were not close to death or clinically dead at the time.  Instead, they were in emotionally intense situations, praying or meditating, sleeping, or in ordinary states of consciousness when this phenomenon occurred. IANDS refers to these as “near-death-like experiences” or NDLEs.  Seventy-five percent of those who sent their accounts had a sense of being close to death, were in a life-threatening situation, or believed they were clinically dead.2

​A LITTLE NDE HISTORY
  • The earliest known description of a near-death experience was recounted by Plato in his "Myth of Er," found at the end of Book X of The Republic, which was written c. 420 B.C. Accounts can be found in the folklore and writings of European, Middle Eastern, African, East Indian, East Asian, Pacific and Native American cultures.11  
  • The term "near-death experience" was coined by Dr. Raymond Moody in his book Life After Life in 1975.12
  • The International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS) was formed in 1981 by a group of researchers subsequent to the outpouring of requests for more information about NDEs.

What is a Near-Death Experience?
A near-death experience, or NDE, is a profound psychological event with transcendental and mystical elements, that may occur to a person close to death or in situations of physical or emotional crisis. By itself, an NDE is an unusual event but is not an indication of  a mental health problem. Across thousands of years and in cultures around the world, NDEs follow a broad general pattern with common features. 

An NDE typically includes one or more of the following: a sense of leaving the body; movement, often through a tunnel; being engulfed in light or darkness; feelings of intense and indescribable love, peace and sometimes terror;  perceived encounters with deceased loved ones, unfamiliar entities and/or spiritual presences; a life review; a landscape; an overpowering sense of knowledge and purpose. The effects of an NDE or related experience are often powerful, enduring, and may be life-altering.
Coming close to death without any of these special features is not a "near-death experience."

ROMOTION FOR THE SELF DOES NOT DIE ~ SPANISH EDITION! Last Updated: Saturday, 21 December 2019 14:37A lively video book presentation in Spanish of El Yo No Muere, the Spanish edition of The Self Does Not Die: Verified paranormal phenomena from near-death experiences by Titus Rivas, Anny Dirven and Rudolf Smit. We are proud that both books are IANDS publications. The presentation was conducted in November at Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), the National Distance Learning University in Madrid.
The three presenters are (left to right) Alejandro Agudo Crespo, physicist and one of the book's translators, Òscar Llorens García, Professor of Philosophy and administrator of the TUNEL Project, Castellón, and Mariano Betés de Toro, Doctor in Medicine and Pharmacy, holding degrees in Biological Sciences and Art History and in Bioethics.

IANDS Newest Training presentation expanding into Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
The IANDS Education Committee set a goal earlier this year to expand our program to include community-based presentations supported through Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI).  One of our members is now making this a reality.  Rhode Island Group Leader Benjamin (Ben) C.  Riggs, Jr.  will include Near-Death Experiences: The Essentials as part of his OLLI presentation at the University of Rhode Island November 26, December 3, 10th and 17th.Ben has been sharing near-death related materials since 2016 at various venues.  He has an excellent background when you combine his IANDS Support Group Leader functions with the fact he lives with an experiencer!  Ben and his wife, Lee Thornton , have lived in Newport, RI since 2000.  In 2014 she published her book, Through Heaven’s Gate and Back, sharing her life altering near-death experience during childbirth in 1973.  That NDE set her on a spiritual path of healing from the aftereffects of a troubled childhood.  More details on her book are found at www.heavenslight.net.

Dr. Elaine Drysdale, a veteran Vancouver psychiatrist and a professor at the University of B.C., finds many of her sick clients are profoundly grateful to learn from her and others about the serious research being conducted into near-death experiences.

Countless anxious patients have felt relief when Dr. Elaine Drysdale does not dismiss their near-death experience as a sign of either delirium, psychoses or lack of oxygen to the brain.
The veteran Vancouver psychiatrist and professor at the University of B.C. finds many of her sick clients are profoundly grateful to learn from her and others about the growing field of near-death research.

About IANDS
IANDS is the informational and networking center in the field of near-death studies, the first organization in the world devoted to exploring near-death and similar experiences. Members are researchers, laypeople, academics, and caregivers; experiencers and non-experiencers; professionals and the general public; from every continent but the Antarctic.

Like IANDS itself, the Association's publications and programs are unique. The quarterly magazine, Vital Signs, and the scholarly, peer-reviewed Journal of Near-Death Studies provide information and intelligent discussion generally not available anywhere else.

FAQs
How common are NDEs?
Near-death experiences have occurred for thousands of years. Today's major studies have indicated that of people who come close to death or experience extreme situations of physical or emotional crisis, 35-40% may later report an NDE; of those who have had a cardiac arrest, perhaps 10-18% may remember an NDE.  No one knows whether the other people in similar circumstances do not have an NDE, have one but do not remember, or choose not to discuss it.  According to a 1982 Gallup study and its subsequent update, in the USA alone between eight and thirteen million adults have had an NDE; no estimate exists of the number of experiences among children.

What does IANDS do, anyway?
IANDS provides information services about near-death and similar experiences; encourages research; and serves as a networking organization for near-death experiencers and their families and caregivers.  It publishes a quarterly magazine, scholarly journal, and a variety of informational materials; sponsors an annual North American conference; and coordinates a loose consortium of support groups in the US and Canada.

Can IANDS get me experiencers to interview?
IANDS can help, but locally-developed sources may be better.  We are finding many of our usual media-competent referrals resistant to more exposure, or their accounts have lost their emotional edge through over-telling.
  • Contact the IANDS office and ask to be put in touch with the Media Coordinator. This is your very best bet.
  • Advertise.  A notice on a bulletin board, in a publication, or on-air usually produces good response; however, keep in mind that you will be getting unknown and unscreened individuals who may or may not be appropriate (or honest).
  • Nurses (less often physicians) may be able to suggest experiencers.
  • Tell everyone you know that you want to talk to near-death experiencers.  You're likely to find people closer than you expect.
