CONSORT Guidelines for RCT's
Why Case Reports? Data collection from the point of care integrating clinical expertise with external evidence informs the delivery of high-quality individualized healthcare. “Good case reporting demands a clear focus, to make explicit to the audience why a particular observation is important in the context of existing knowledge.” (Vandenbroucke 2001) The CARE guidelines for case reports help authors reduce bias, increase transparency, and provide early signals of what works, for which patients, and under which circumstances. Case reports following the CARE guidelines support the systematic measurement of:
Online training in writing case reports following the CARE guidelines is available from Scientific Writing in Health and Medicine (SWIHM). |
What are the CARE guidelines?
The CARE guidelines were developed by an international group of experts to increase the accuracy, transparency, and usefulness of case reports. Since the 2013 and 2017 CARE publications in the Journal of Clinical Epidemiology, these guidelines have been endorsed by multiple medical journals/publishers and translated into multiple languages. The CARE guidelines support the efforts of the Equator Network to improve the transparency and accuracy of health research reporting. Healthcare stakeholder groups that benefit when CARE informed case reports are written include:

Mission
Scientific Writing in Health & Medicine (SWIHM) serves the writing and publishing needs of the healthcare community, using health research reporting guidelines in general, and the CARE guidelines for case reports in particular, to increase the quality of publications in health and medicine. SWIHM is connecting clinical and research communities through:
Case Report Writing Course
SWIHM’s online case report writing course follows the CARE guidelines and supports authors in writing case reports for presentations and publications. The CARE guidelines, available from the EQUATOR Network and CARE have been endorsed by multiple medical journals. They aim to standardize the reporting of data from the point of care to improve the quality and transparency of case reports. https://vimeo.com/355441128
CONSORT Website
CoNSORT stands for Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials and encompasses various initiatives developed by the CONSORT Group to alleviate the problems arising from inadequate reporting of randomized controlled trials.
The CONSORT Statement
The main product of CONSORT is the CONSORT Statement, which is an evidence-based, minimum set of recommendations for reporting randomized trials. It offers a standard way for authors to prepare reports of trial findings, facilitating their complete and transparent reporting, and aiding their critical appraisal and interpretation.
The CONSORT Statement comprises a 25-item checklist and a flow diagram. The checklist items focus on reporting how the trial was designed, analyzed, and interpreted; the flow diagram displays the progress of all participants through the trial. The CONSORT “Explanation and Elaboration” document explains and illustrates the principles underlying the CONSORT Statement. We strongly recommend that it is used in conjunction with the CONSORT Statement.
In addition, extensions of the CONSORT Statement have been developed to give additional guidance for RCTs with specific designs, data and interventions.
