“American Odyssey” Book Celebrates “Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month”By: Get News

​American Odyssey, From Beijing to Washington, is a new autobiography written by Rose Hong, an American author, TV producer & host, and international business executive.  

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI Heritage Month) is an annual celebration that recognizes the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent to the United States. The AAPI includes East, Southeast and South Asia—and the Pacific Islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. As of 2019, there were about 23 million people of Asian or Pacific Islander descent in the United States. According to the Pew Research Center.  AAPI people are a diverse and growing population that makes up about 7 percent of the total U.S. population.

The effort to officially recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander contributions to the United States began in the late 1970s, and took over 10 years to make it a permanent month-long celebration.

After the House and the Senate passed the Resolution, President Jimmy Carter signed it into Public Law 95-419 on October 5, 1978. From 1980 to 1990, each president passed annual proclamations for Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, Congress expanded the observance from a week to a month. May was annually designated as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in 1992 under the George H. W. Bush administration with the passing of Public Law 102-540. Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was renamed AAPI Heritage Month in 2009.

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have contributed significantly to many facets of American culture and society, including science and medicine, literature and art, sports and recreation, government and politics, and activism and law.

Today, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the fastest growing racial group in the United States.

She came to the United States with only $35 dollars and spoking broken English. Rose Hong started her American odyssey with nothing and now she is an accomplished American citizen, and her work has impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Asian Americans contribute to every sector of our society and trace their roots to more than 20 countries in the East, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent; each with their unique histories, cultures, languages, and other characteristics.

In between unending questions and queries
In the middle of sharp nails and arrows
Underground on tunnels
Listening the threats of bullets
Without having knowledge of why,

Death threats from own blood relatives,
I am beaten, threaten and treated as enemies,
From my own house, I am kicked out,
No idea why, but my identity is endangered

Role and responsibilities are piling and piling
Unfinished list of job is filing and filing
Own blood relatives tearing me apart and nailing
In between the ocean of never-ending path

Knocking doors and doors for helpful hand
Telling the story of misery, which has unlimited bands
Raising the hands as a defeated worrier
No one ready to support except knocking out

Stretching my arms to everyone who cross by me
Showing the wounds of beaten body and ugly fortune of mine
Yearning for love and sympathy of people

Dark path with sharp thrones are in front mine

Prof. Medani P. Bhandari, PhD, is well-known humanitarian, poet, essayist, and author of hundreds of scientific papers and many books on climate science, sustainability, biodiversity, social theories and practices and inequalities. Currently, he is serving at Gandaki University, Nepal, Akamai University, USA and Sumy State University, Ukraine with various capacity. He is motto is to give back to the society, whatever, he has learned, earned, and experienced. This poem reflects his current state of war in Ukraine and within and beyond.
